Wood male mask in carved pine wood, and finished entirely by hand. A typical object of the carnival of Sauris (Carnia, UD).

It can be hung on the wall; maximum dimensions 17 x 10 x h 23 cm.

Possible imperfections are intrinsic characteristics of original products; minor differences of the product compared to the photo indicate the high craftsmanship of a handmade piece.

PRODUCTION

The woodwork had a significant development in Sauris in Carnia, where the three Plozzer brothers cultivate this tradition devoting themselves to woodwork, going from furniture to objects, from building components to the creation of the famous wooden masks of Sauris Carnival.

Also in harmony with the environment in which they are located, they pose a particular attention to low environmental impact workings.

HISTORY

The mask belongs to the carnival tradition of the mountain town of Sauris (UD), and is also referred to as “Maschera Bella” (beautiful mask), together with that of the man. The principal characteristics are the clear face, the red lips and the rosy cheeks, holes for the eyes and mouth, and the well polished and precisely painted wood.

The Carnival of Sauris (Der Zahrar Voschankh) has had considerable influences from the German and Alpine world, and has developed very well defined characters that lead the event, having similar characteristics to the carnivals of Sappada and other alpine areas. The typical masks are: the Rolar with old clothes, cowbells, and the face covered with soot, the Kheirar with an alder branch broom, and then all the other masks are  divided into Beautiful, Less Beautiful and Ugly.
