PRODUCTION

Nowadays there are only few artisans specialized in making pumps, here called scarpets or friulane, because a typical product of this Region. The production, both in the classic velvet style and in the more actual coloured models, is characterized from a handcrafted manufacture and high quality materials. Main characteristic of friulane or furlane is a special production that require a difficult and precise needlecraft, the same of the original tradition, to bound the sole to the upper shoe. The result of this manual technique is a pair of slippers, unique, comfortable and flexible.

HISTORY

“Scarpèti”, in the local Friulian, is the name of the ancient handmade velvet shoe, typical of the Val Colvera (PN), Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy. Their production dates back to an ancient era and varies according to the production area, as each area of Friuli has its own model which varies in some details and also in some realization steps.
It’s an art that has been handed down for several generations that some artisans still carry on keeping both the traditional version in black velvet or creating more modern versions using different fabrics and colors.

The upper of the scarpèti is made by superimposing the paper mold on the velvet, and then sewing the heel to “close” the mold. We proceed with other steps in which other parts are added that serve to complete the upper. The upper is then stitched entirely by hand to the sole. The sole of the scarpèti can be of two types: rubber or fabric. In the first case, once upon a time, the rubber that was used was that of the wheel tires; in the second case, however, the sole was made by overlapping more than 20 layers of fabrics (sometimes, among the various fabrics, some layer of paper ware also inserted to make them even more resistant ) and were quilted entirely by hand. “Scarpèti” with rubber soles were used for everyday life, while scarpèti with fabric soles were used for holidays (for example on Sundays to go to mass).
